A cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood around the body. There are many reasons why this may occur, for example, as a result of a heart attack/disease, stroke, aneurysm, and any other medical condition leading to ventricular fibrillation (a type of arrhythmia). Indeed, any one of the afore mentioned conditions, or a seemingly completely out of the blue cardiac arrest with no obvious cause, can happen unexpectedly anytime, anywhere.

Often occurring at home or work, those that suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK have a less than one in ten chance of surviving. In addition, more than half of patients who die of a heart attack sadly never make it into the hospital. A cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that can happen without warning. If someone is in cardiac arrest, they collapse suddenly and will be unconscious, unresponsive, and not breathing or not breathing normally – this may mean they’re making gasping noises. Without immediate treatment, the person will die. As such, if you see someone having a cardiac arrest, phone 999 immediately and start CPR.

Perform CPR safely and quickly, with no training needed.

When someone has a cardiac arrest, their chance of survival decreases by 10% for every minute that passes without effective CPR & defibrillation. Providing first-aid can be overwhelming for untrained individuals when confronted with an emergency. However, with LifePad® help is at hand!

The coloured LEDs provide you with visual feedback for the optimum compression pressure, while an acoustic sounds will signal the optimum compression frequency of 100 beats per minute. Made from flexible material, the LifePad® adapts to any body shape and can be used on anyone aged 12 and over. In addition, the surface shows the exact positioning of the hands for optimal resuscitation practice. Thanks to the compact design, the LifePad® easily fits into an A5 bag, making the device simple to store and travel with. The device can also be used in combination with a defibrillator (acoustic signal can be switched off for this).

How is the LifePad® by Beurer used correctly?

1. Check for consciousness and breathing
2. Make the emergency call
3. Expose the upper body
4. Apply LifePad® - Pull out the battery strip to switch on
5. Perform compressions
6. Allow the chest to relax again

Repeat steps 5 and 6 at the rhythm of the acoustic signal to ensure a rate of 100 compressions per minute. The cardiac massage is carried out until the patient shows clear signs of life or the emergency services take over.
