The popular and natural pain relief option for women in labour, TENS, sends mild electrical stimulation via skin electrodes to the nerves in order to block pain signals from going to the brain.
Not only effectively stopping the pain, TENS has no side effects. Gas and air and pethidene injections can both cause drowsiness and nausea, making it difficult to concentrate. Injections can sometimes have an effect on your baby, in some cases making it difficult for them to breathe or cause problems with their first feed. Epidurals, where the entire lower body is numbed to block pain, can have serious side effects, often you will lose some movement in your legs and the midwife or doctor will have to use forceps to help deliver the baby as the second stage of labour becomes prolonged.
The TENS machine allows women to remain in control during labour, while having relief from the pain. MamaTENS is easy to use, simply attach the four electrodes to your lower back and you can control the level of stimulation yourself. With MamaTENS you have the freedom to move, even walk about, which many women find help the labour process.
There are 3 pre-set programmes designed on MamaTENS for your progressive stages of labour. Adjust the intensity to a level that makes you comfortable, and press the Boost button during your contractions to send a surge of stimulation to combat the pain, and once you release the button, the intensity returns to the your own chosen level.
Please note: TENS cannot be used during the first 26 weeks of pregnancy, and you should never place the electrodes on the abdomen at any point during your pregnancy or labour.
