Improve Your Sleep Quality and Increase the Hours Spent in REM
We spend a third of our lives sleeping, or at least, we should. Sadly, sleep deprivation is commonplace in many households with 1 in 5 people suffering from insomnia.
For some it may be a relatively short-term issue due to having a new baby come into the world, for others, insomnia is a condition that impacts their everyday lives in more ways than they can count. Sleep deprivation can contribute to and worsen multiple conditions including depression, anxiety, and obesity, as well as reducing cognitive function and focus. It can affect relationships, careers, family life and intimacy and is sadly becoming a more common complaint as we try to keep up with the expectations set out in our modern world.
Could Somnox Work as a Dementia Aid?
Simulation pets are used in care homes to help those with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The feeling of a weighted, ‘breathing’ object on the lap is very calming, so could Somnox help reduce the often erratic and restless symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s? As highlighted in a review by the guardian, Somnox ‘is the weight of a baby. And it is comforting, cushioned with foam and soft, thick fabric. (it) has a soft belly part, which gently expands and deflates’. To an Alzheimer’s sufferer, Somnox could be a calming tonic to cuddle at night and induce the production of serotonin for a restful night’s sleep.
Can a ‘Sleep Robot’ Really Improve Your Sleep?
Somnox founder Julian Jagtenberg began designing the Somnox to help his mother, who after years living with insomnia had become addicted to sleeping pills. With a team of dedicated engineers and researchers by his side, Julian and his team developed the Somnox. Many prototypes were made and results from hundreds of test subjects were used to create the ultimate sleep companion and bring the world better sleep, without the need for addictive medication that often comes with side effects of its own.
The high-tech incubator in encased in a baby-soft cover, made by Royal Auping – Europe’s leading mattress manufacturer. Somnox covers are expertly manufactured at Auping’s first-class facilities in the Netherlands to offer the softest feel against the skin whilst also being durable for long term use. The cover removes easily for machine washing, this is great for hygiene purposes.
How Does the Somnox Sleep Robot Work?
In conjunction with the Somnox app, you tailor your sleep aid to breathe to a rhythm that suits you. This can be using the pre-set rhythms that are already programmed into the Somnox, or you can create your own. Using factors like gender, age, and body mass index, the app predicts a comfortable breathing tempo and then allows you to fine-tune it until the pace feels right. This ultimately leads to slow, steady breaths that are the most conducive to sleep. Feeling the Somnox breathing in your arms gives a similar sensation to hugging a pet or snuggling your beloved child or partner, but without anyone disturbing you as you sleep by pulling off the covers or inadvertently kicking you in their sleep!
Sounds to Encourage Enriched Sleep
The right sounds, songs or voices can truly help you fall asleep, why else would we play lullabies for our children or read them bedtime stories? This doesn’t change as we get older, yet we seem to outgrow the things that can help us sleep better. Whatever sounds work to help lull you to sleep can be uploaded on to your Somnox. If you have the audio file it can be uploaded! So whether it’s a recording of James Alexander Gordon reading the football results in his dulcet tones or Brahms, Bach or even Beyoncé’s classics; your favourite sounds will gently help switch your mind off and get you to sleep faster, helping you remain in a deep sleep for longer. You can adjust these sounds to play from 5 to 90 minutes.
As discussed in a Guardian article around the practice of Conscious Respiration, devotees say that programmes and workshops in which they focus deeply on their breathing rhythm help to address anxiety, addiction, stress, and other health issues. The NHS promotes breathing exercises to reduce stress and breathing workshops have been implemented in a number of high-stress workplaces around the UK, including in parliament.
Dr Emma Seppälä, a psychologist who holds positions at Yale and Stanford universities, says studies have found breathing practices can significantly increase well-being while decreasing anxiety and trauma.
“Research shows that emotions and breathing are tightly linked, each emotion has a specific pattern of breathing that goes with it,” she says.
“By changing your breathing, you can trigger the ‘rest and digest’ parasympathetic nervous system – the opposite of the ‘fight or flight’ response. Your body calms down. As a consequence, you relax and feel better.”
