What is acupressure? Acupressure is a form of alternative therapy in which manual pressure is used on the body to stimulate specific points, along what are considered to be lines of energy. It’s often considered as acupuncture without the needles, so a much less invasive form of the therapy. Acupressure is thought to have started over 3000 years ago with the understanding that there are 361 defined points on the body, which all lay on "meridian lines”; the energy channels of the body that are in direct contact with specific areas and organs.
Rubbing or applying controlled, gentle pressure (acupressure) to certain body parts on the skin in the area corresponding to a specific body area or organ, will help eliminate the disturbances in energy flow to the specific body area or organ.
The Sissel Acupressure Mat is made up from two parts. All you need to do is attach the two parts of the carpet from the top on a flat surface. To start using it, place the Sissel Acupressure mat on a bed, massage table or on floor mats, then lie down on it comfortably.
The Gate Control Theory of Pain
The Gate Control Theory of Pain is a theory developed by Ronald Melzack and Patrick Wall in the early 1960's. In the theory the two men developed, your experience of pain depends largely on a complex interplay of two nerve systems (fast nerves and slow nerves), as both nerve systems process pain signals in their own individual way.
However, in the Gate Control Theory of Pain, before the signals can reach the brain these pain messages encounter nerve gates in your spinal cord that open or close depending upon a number of factors (including messages transmitted down from the brain - endorphins).
When the gates are open, pain messages get through more or less easily and the pain you feel can be intense. When the gates are closed, pain messages are prevented from reaching the brain and may not even be experienced. After hitting a certain body part such as your leg or your arm, you have probably already experienced that rubbing the area seems to provide some relief.
The rubbing (stimulation) activates other sensory nerve fibres which are ‘faster’, and these ‘faster’ fibres transmit information about pressure and touch that reach the spinal cord and brain to override some of the pain messages carried by the ‘slower’ fibres.
Using your Acupressure Mat will help to:
- Relieve pain and tension
- Stimulate blood circulation
- Aid in a restful night’s sleep
- Sooth, relax the neck, back and shoulders
- Relieve aches
