Red tableware encourages Alzheimer’s sufferers to eat more and avoid severe weight loss.
A study of 9 men with advanced Alzheimer’s disease found that when using red crockery and cutlery increased the amount of food they consumed by 25% and the amount of liquid they by 84%. The study, undertaken by Boston university, shows that brightly coloured table encourages Alzheimer’s patients to eat more than when using white plates and stainless steel cutlery.
Since as many as 40% of people with Alzheimer’s experience significant weight loss as the disease progresses, it’s important to make mealtimes as comfortable as possible to encourage healthy eating. It is thought that when using plain tableware it becomes hard for Alzheimer’s sufferers to distinguish between the plate and the food and recognise that it is time to eat.
A bright colour makes it easier to recognise food and acknowledge that it is mealtime, helping the person to feel more comfortable and be encouraged to eat more. This Red Standard Tableware Set is specially designed for people with Alzheimer’s who may experience limited mobility or dexterity in order to feed themselves. All items, except for their suction-cup bases, are safe to use in the dishwasher and microwave.
Large Scoop Bowl
Users can easily eat with one hand since this bowl has a raised edge and suction cup on the base to avoid tips or spills. 150mm diamater
Like the bowl, one edge is higher on this dish to make it easy to eat with one hand, and the suction base will prevent the plate from moving around. 235mm diameter.
Plastic Plate Guard
This guard will fit over any plate between 200mm and 300mm in diameter, securing safely on the rim to prevent food from being pushed off the edge of the plate.
The user can eat with one hand when using this egg cup without risking it tipping over due to the non-slip suction cup base.
Nose Cutout Cup
Some people with advanced Alzheimer’s can have difficulty lifting the head or extending the neck, so this cup has been designed to leave enough space for the nose and allow comfortable drinking. 237ml capacity.
Tips and spills can be avoided with this cup, which comes with 2 removable lids with extended mouthpieces for comfortable drinking. 230ml capacity.
