What is Tetanus?
Tetanus is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani which produces and exotoxin that blocks the release of neurotransmitters which leads to muscular contractions and spasms. This bacterium is occasionally present in animal digestive tracts, animal droppings and in the ground. It is able to enter the body via an open wound, although the this infection can also occur when there is a deep puncture wound for example following a bite, burn, cut or even an ulcer, which in many cases be caused by a scratch on the skin or by a tiny prick.
Tetanus is a serious medical condition that can be fatal if untreated. Speak with your doctor if you have a wound that is deep, dirty or with a foreign object, or you are not sure whether you have been fully vaccinated against tetanus. Your doctor can assess the wound and decide if you need a vaccination or treatment.
