What is Strep A - why is it on the rise in the UK?
Strep A, also known as Group A Streptococcus (GAS), is a type of bacteria called Streptococcus pyogenes. It is responsible for a wide range of infections in humans, including strep throat, skin infections, and more severe conditions like scarlet fever and invasive diseases such as pneumonia and bloodstream infections. Strep A infections are generally more common in crowded environments, such as schools, nurseries, and other group settings where children and people are in close contact. Strep A infections can affect people of all ages, symptoms of Strep A in children can vary depending on the type of infection they have but Strep A cases are on the rise here in the UK.
Here are some common symptoms associated with different Strep A infections in children:
- Strep Throat: Sore throat that develops suddenly
- Painful swallowing Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus Fever (usually above 101°F or 38.3°C)
- Headache Swollen lymph nodes in the neck Fatigue or general feeling of malaise
- Loss of appetite Nausea or vomiting
- Abdominal pain, especially in younger children Scarlet Fever (a complication of Strep Throat):
- Strep throat symptoms (sore throat, fever, swollen tonsils)
- Bright red rash that feels like sandpaper, typically starting on the neck and chest and then spreading to other parts of the body Red lines in the folds of the skin, such as the armpits, groin, and elbow creases
- Pastia's lines (red streaks) in the skin creases "Strawberry tongue" (red and bumpy appearance)
- Fever Headache Nausea or vomiting Abdominal pain
