How does bright light therapy work?
The amount of light we can see is measured in a unit called ‘lux’. This is a bit like the ‘watts’ of a bulb, but it refers to what we can see with our eyes rather than the amount of electricity being used. Daylight in summertime typically measures at about 50,000 – 100,000 lux, which will make you feel happy and alert. During winter when we’re indoors most of the time, the light we are exposed to can be as low as 100-200 lux. This is what makes you feel sleepy, low and prone to Seasonal affective disorder. Doctors recommend that we get at least 10,000 lux of light exposure a day, which is where SAD light therapy can help.
