When your eyes are exposed to light that is above 2500 lux (like that emitted by the Candeo), your body reacts by producing less of the hormone melatonin and more of a hormone called serotonin. Melatonin regulates your sleep cycles by making you feel drowsy, so by creating less of it you will feel more awake, energetic and ready to face the day. Serotonin is often called the ‘happy hormone’; the more of it your body produces, the less depressed you will feel. Light therapy is highly recommended by doctors and the medical community for treatment of S.A.D. and sleep disorders as it is natural, simple to do and doesn’t involve taking anti-depressant medication, which many people have unpleasant reactions to.
How to customise your bright light therapy programme
Innolux recommends using your SAD light 3-5 times a week, switching to daily sessions if your symptoms are particularly bad. Sitting in front of your lamp for 30 minutes is enough to feel the benefits; it’s fine to do other things during your treatment, so feel free to read a book and relax while your lamp does its work. The most effective time for treatment is between 6 and 8am, but you can choose to use your lamp at any time of day and still feel the benefits. Included in the lamp’s instruction booklet is a therapy diary, which will help you to track your treatment and find the best times and frequency for you.
