In Britain today we’re becoming increasingly conscious about recycling. Most of us will separate out our paper, plastics and foods when disposing of our household waste, but we fall down when it comes to sanitary products.
An average woman will use 10,000 disposable sanitary products in her lifetime, all of which will end up on landfill sites. As a collective, we women in the UK are responsible for dumping around 5 billion menstrual products every single year. Wow. This really is something we need to change.
We’ve already told you plenty about the benefits of reusable menstrual cups
and we know a lot of you absolutely swear by them. But for other women menstrual cups
just aren’t quite right for them; they don’t feel as comfortable as towels and tampons, or perhaps they like to use sanitary towels along with their cup as extra protection against leaks.
We’ve got a new solution. GladRags!
are reusable cotton menstrual pads
. Don’t ‘yuck’ us just yet – they’re not half as bad as the billions of used towels disposed of on landfill sites. They’re soft, comfortable and incredibly absorbent.
pad will last you at least 5 years before it needs to be thrown away – though it could last far longer. Investing in GladRags
will dramatically reduce your contribution to landfill waste, and it will save you a heck of a lot of money too.
Still can’t get over the ‘ick’ factor? GladRags are more hygienic than disposable sanitary towels.
Why? Well disposable pads are backed with plastic which means they stay moist inside and become a breeding ground for bacteria and odours. Gross. There’s no wonder we want to get them straight in the bin as soon as possible.
are different. They’re made from soft and breathable cotton towelling, allowing them to quickly absorb moisture and dry out. Dried menstrual blood does not harbour bacteria; it is the warm, moist environment of damp blood that encourages bacteria growth. So with GladRags
you will stay clean, comfortable and completely odour-free.
I know what you’re thinking, how do I clean them?! Well, you need to soak them for a few hours in cool water, then you can just throw them in the washing machine with your coloured clothes and hang them up to dry. Yep, we know this is a little extra work than throwing your used towel into the bin but it’s worth it to know that you’re helping reduce landfill waste.
Plus, you’ll know that your sanitary pads are definitely, without-a-doubt, 100% clean too. In recent years there have been reports of disposable sanitary products being contaminated with mould spores and even the E. coli virus.
Pads and tampons aren’t necessarily sterile when they leave the factory, and obviously you can’t wash them before use. With GladRags
you know your pads are totally clean and healthy because you wash them yourself.
There are even more health benefits of using GladRags. They’re free from toxins.
Mamavation and Naturally Savvy are currently campaigning
for feminine hygiene manufacturers to list the ingredients on their sanitary towels and tampons. Why? Because they’re filled with nasty chemicals that can be toxic, and the manufacturers don’t even have to list the ingredients.
So what exactly could be lurking in your disposable menstrual products?
- Bleach. Although this makes your pads and tampons look beautifully white, the process of bleaching them releases dioxine, a known carcinogen – it causes cancer.
- Odour neutralisers. They are usually made up of a cocktail of chemicals including polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene and propylene glycol, all of which are linked to cancer, infertility, birth defects and hormone disruption.
- Latex. This is a known allergen and is commonly found in sanitary pads, so if you tend to feel a little itchy and uncomfortable down below it could be a reaction.
Remember; your intimate area is a lot more sensitive to allergens and chemicals than the skin on the rest of your body. It is also a lot more porous, making it easier for your body to absorb the harmful chemicals.
Check out this video from Naturally Savvy in which disposable pads are set alight to give an idea of how many chemicals are in there. See all that black smoke? Doesn't look healthy does it?!
are free from toxins and since they’re so soft they’re really comfortable. Wave goodbye to itching, redness, dryness and rashes, and no need to worry about increased risks of cancer.
Have we managed to convince you to switch to GladRags yet?!
