It is estimated that between 10 - 20 percent of all women are born with inverted nipples - this is where the nipple is flat or actually turns inwards. They are not medically harmful, but for aesthetic reasons, many women like to have pert nipples. There are two types, one is known as a "shy" nipple which when stimulated by cold or excitement will protrude, or the "true" inverted nipple which is always present from birth. This is usually caused by connections to the underlying tissue, ligaments and the skin.
