Combat S.A.D. the Scandinavian way, with the world’s first light therapy pendant lamp!
You don’t have to sacrifice style to benefit from bright light therapy – many lamps on the market focus only on function, making you want to hide them away when they’re not in use. The Innolux Candeo is the first ever pendant-style SAD lamp. It comes in a stunning bright white colour that will complement any room and is easy to affix to any standard ceiling light fitting. Another unique feature of the Candeo is its dimmer function; at the flick of a switch, it can be transformed from a bright light suitable for therapy, to warm mood lighting perfect for relaxing and entertaining.
Are you afflicted with Seasonal Affective Disorder? Trouble sleeping getting you down?
In countries such as the UK, the onset of winter means very short, dark days and gloomy weather. This often means that you leave the house in the dark, spend all day inside at work and then go home after sundown. Our bodies were not designed to live in these types of conditions – lack of sunlight can lead to a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder or S.A.D. Scientists believe that S.A.D. is similar to the natural processes that cause hibernation in animals, taken to the extreme by our indoor lifestyles.
Another group of conditions that can be treated with the Innolux Candeo are Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders – these can be caused by doing shift work or just as a result of your biological clock having unusual timing. You may find that you struggle to stay awake in the evening and then wake up very early in the morning at a time that’s not convenient, or perhaps you find that your sleep schedule varies a lot or causes you to wake often during the night. This can cause a huge amount of stress and inconvenience to you and the people around you. By using a light therapy lamp like the Innolux Candeo, you can gently adjust your circadian rhythm and regain a normal sleep cycle. Being able to sleep normally is invaluable and will have you feeling yourself again!
Bright light therapy – the natural solution
When your eyes are exposed to light that is above 2500 lux (like that emitted by the Candeo), your body reacts by producing less of the hormone melatonin and more of a hormone called serotonin. Melatonin regulates your sleep cycles by making you feel drowsy, so by creating less of it you will feel more awake, energetic and ready to face the day. Serotonin is often called the ‘happy hormone’; the more of it your body produces, the less depressed you will feel. Light therapy is highly recommended by doctors and the medical community for treatment of S.A.D. and sleep disorders as it is natural, simple to do and doesn’t involve taking anti-depressant medication, which many people have unpleasant reactions to.
How to customise your bright light therapy programme
Innolux recommends using your SAD light 3-5 times a week, switching to daily sessions if your symptoms are particularly bad. Sitting in front of your lamp for 30 minutes is enough to feel the benefits; it’s fine to do other things during your treatment, so feel free to read a book and relax while your lamp does its work. The most effective time for treatment is between 6 and 8am, but you can choose to use your lamp at any time of day and still feel the benefits. Included in the lamp’s instruction booklet is a therapy diary, which will help you to track your treatment and find the best times and frequency for you.
If you struggle to stay awake in the evenings, a session in the afternoon will help you to stay up for longer and enjoy the nightlife. Your Candeo light therapy lamp can also help you to recover from jet lag; an evening session will delay your sleep cycle while a morning one will help you fall asleep sooner, helping you to reset your circadian rhythm and get back into your normal routine.

- Sad light / Sundowning light - I am convinced it has worked for her. Review by Christine P
Tge lamp is a design from Finland, which made me buy because they know a thing or two about long winter days and the affects of sAD on mood and depression. Mum calls it her Happy light and she has it on for most of the day, I don't think you can OD on them! I did get an electrician to fit it (which was quite straightforward) but this is a policy of where she lives, otherwise I would have been able to do it myself.
Its been up for about 4 weeks now and Mums mood is considerably better, and I haven;t noticed her cranky or confused and befuddles' when I get there later in the day so I am convinced it has worked for her. (Posted on 24 January 2017)
