Cheaper isnt always best
While most purpose-made personal lubricants available contain water and at least one preservative, and additives called parabens (see below for more information about parabens). Other lubricants often make a big deal about any natural ingredient such as Soybean Extract or Aloe Vera Gel but generally, when you read their labels, if they disclose their ingredients at all, the composition is far from natural. Most contain parabens, often several types such as methyl, propyl, butyl or listed other another name such as Methyl Hydroxybenzoate or LiquarPar Optima.
Sylk Natural Personal Lubricant's new formulation, seems to be the only fully natural and Paraben-free lubricant in the world to date.
Whats in your lube? - Parabens?
Sylk Natural Personal Lubricant's new formulation, seems to be the only fully natural and Paraben-free lubricant in the world to date.
Parabens are synthetic chemicals ultimately derived from a petroleum or crude oil base. They are widely used as preservatives in cosmetics and antibacterial agents in pharmaceutical preparations. The proper name is para-hydroxybenzoic acid alkyl ester and there are 4 main types in common use. Propyl-, Methyl-, Ethyl- and Butyl-Paraben; many products will have 2 or more of these chemicals as part of a preservative system. As preservatives in cosmetics are legally required to be listed on the label in the European Union it is easy to find out which products contain these chemicals. However elsewhere in the world, parabens are often not listed or contained under another name such as Methyl Hydroxybenzoate or LiquaPar Optima.
Parabens have now been found in cancerous tumours, and particularly in breast tissue (Darbre et al (2004)). The source of these parabens is not yet clear as parabens can also be found in some foods, so there are internal and external possibilities to consider. Kyoto University (Japan) has studied how external parabens or topically applied parabens can penetrate the skin and get into the blood stream. Heildburg, Reading and Brunel Universities have carried out various studies regarding likely effect of parabens on our bodies. They found that alkyl hydroxy benzoate preservatives (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, and butylparaben) are weakly estrogenic. In other words, these preservatives have the ability to mimic estrogen in the body (oestrogenic), with butylparaben being the most potent.
There are several theories about what is happening, including the oestrogen mimicking factor of parabens and how that’s impacting on cancerous tumours. Our own theories glean from all the research seen. We know through Kyoto University studies that topically applied parabens can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Numerous studies with Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (“EDC”s) have shown that they (EDCs) can get stored in fatty tissues and our major organs.
Because the normal healthy cells around the deposit of synthetic paraben cannot form in their normal way, you can get abnormalities. That’s one of the things which may be a result of using strong synthetic preservatives. Alternatives and most plant preservatives don’t have the strength that synthetic preservatives do. They tend to break down when they come into contact with air and warmth causing oxidisation. This process can also release new beneficial compounds for the body, all derived from the natural plant extracts.
If the lubricant you're using - or choosing - contain parabens, you may wish to consult the contents label and check out the ingredients. After all, you're using these internally where absorption through mucous membranes is very efficient.
What our customers say:
"I never thought I would "dry up" it was awful! I was on a new medication and my Doctor recommended Sylk to me. I am so pleased that I tried it (and found the courage to ask my Doctor), my husband can't even tell I use it, and it really does make lovemaking feel so much better and it means I'm not sore afterwards too!"
