Hot Flashes? try Maryon Stewarts Cool Down Tricks
If you are starting to feel the heat as the weather warms up don't despair. There are plenty of things you can do to bring down the temperature. Follow our cool-down plan to make sure you step out your cool confident self whatever the occasion and the weather!
EAT WISELY
Eat little and often. The heat generated by digesting big meals can bring on or make flushes worse. Carrying extra pounds especially if the weather is hot can also slow you down. The best way to keep a check on your weight is to eat a low-fat, high fibre diet with plenty of fresh summer fruit and vegetables and to take regular exercise.
SAY NO TO STRESS
Stress and hot weather really don't go together and the mix can quickly bring on symptoms such as headaches and flushes. Try this simple yoga relaxation exercise for 15 minutes a day. Sit comfortably and close your eyes. Focus on any tension in your body and mentally let go of the muscles in that area. Become aware of your breathing. Focus on the sensation of coolness. Imagine that you are as light as a feather. Then focus on the weight of your body. Concentrate on each of your senses in turn. Finally, return your focus to the world around you.
TAKE A DEEP BREATH
If the heat starts to get to you or you feel a flush coming on, stop what you are doing as soon as you can and take several slow, deep, calming breaths then try the following simple exercise. Take 10 long, slow deep breaths. As you inhale, hold your breath for three seconds and then breathe out in one easy exhalation.
KEEP YOUR HOME COOL
Hot rooms can aggravate flushing so keep your house, especially your bedroom, as cool as you can. During the day open the windows but draw the curtains. Hopefully this will create a through breeze while protecting against the heat of the sun. If the weather gets really hot use a fan.
SLEEP WELL
Make sure your bedroom is cool at night and keep a fan, wet wipes and a cold drink by your bed in case of night sweats. Use cotton sheets, pillowcases and nightclothes and opt for a summer lightweight duvet.
GO NATURAL
Choose clothes in natural fabrics such as cotton and linen to keep you cool, Steer well clear of synthetic fibres such as nylon and silk, which can aggravate flushes. Avoid tight clothes that cling. Go instead for looser styles that give your skin a chance to breathe.
PLAY FOOTSIE
Cool feet equal a cool body so wear airy, open-toed sandals. Soothe hot, puffy feet with a cool peppermint footbath. Infuse a handful of fresh peppermint leaves in half a pint of boiling water. Cool, strain and add to a footbath. Alternatively, use two drops of peppermint essential oil.
Try
Peditech
Fresh Feet Formula.
REMEDY IT
If the heat starts to get to you and you feel your temper rise try one of the Bach Flower remedies. Rescue remedy, impatiens and sweet chestnut all have cooling properties. Dilute a couple of drops of your chosen remedy in a glass of water or apply directly under your tongue.
GET OUT AND ABOUT
Towns are always hotter and more crowded than the countryside. So if a heat wave is expected think ahead and plan a day out by the sea if possible. Failing that get out in to the countryside or at least to the local park. Sea air is also full of negative ions, which counteract the effects of the positive ions that circulate in polluted city air, badly ventilated rooms and air-conditioned offices.
SLOW DOWN
Rushing around is a sure way to send body temperatures soaring. Take a tip from our European cousins and slow down your daily pace. Walk slower, think slower and just let yourself go with the flow. Escape the afternoon heat by taking a relaxing siesta. According to research a siesta of 60-90 minutes can be as good as a full night's sleep for restoring alertness, boosting mood and improving concentration.
DRINK UP
Keep your daily water intake levels high to avoid dehydration, which can lead to headaches. Aim for at least six to eight glasses a day. Adding ice and a slice of lemon or lime can add some extra zing. Go also for fruit with high water content. Melon, kiwi, pears, apples are all good choices.
GET FRUITY
Make a refreshing summer thirst quencher by whizzing up your favourite summer fruits in a blender. Add some Soya milk or soya yoghurt and drink immediately or store in the fridge.
DON A HAT
Wearing a hat will help to beat the heat. Opt for one with a wide brim rather than a baseball cap and choose a natural fabric such as straw or cotton. For maximum heat protection go for a hat that covers your neck. And don't forget the sunglasses.
SPRITZ OVER
Keep an atomiser full of water in the fridge. Simply spritzing cool water over your face is a great way to an instant cool down. For an ultra soothing treat add three or four drops of essential oil of lavender. Carry a mini water spray and some wet wipes in your handbag at all times.
CALM DOWN
If you are feeling really hot and bothered put your hands and wrists under a running cold-water tap. It can work wonders on frazzled nerves.
STAY COOL AS A CUCUMBER
Make your own cucumber facemask. Puree half a cucumber in a blender, add a dash of milk or plain yogurt and a teaspoon of honey. Refrigerate, then apply over your face and neck. Place a slice of cucumber over each eye. Leave for 15 minutes before washing off.
CHILL COSMETICS
Keep cosmetics and toiletries in the fridge. When the heat is on, apply a cooling slick of lip balm, body lotion or moisturiser. Look for make-up, shower gel and perfumes containing ingredients that feel cooling on the skin such as peppermint, mandarin, grapefruit or aloe vera. Aloe vera can also help stop skin drying out in the sun.
BAG IT
To keep the heat and the flushes at bay on a hot day out, make up a cool bag containing the following top chill-out remedies. Pack cold water, a chilled eye mask, a face and body spritzer, a flask of ice cubes and a cool wet face cloth, plus slices of juicy chilled watermelon for a refreshing snack.
CHECK YOUR INTAKE OF SOYA
Are you including enough soya in your diet? phytoestrogens, plant chemicals that mimic the action of the body's natural oestrogen, can help keep menopausal symptoms at bay including hot flushes.
Good sources of Soya include soya milk, tofu and soya flour, linseeds, lentils, chickpeas, sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seeds.
Pour soya milk over your breakfast cereal, eat soya yogurt with fruit and sprinkle seeds over summer salad leaves.
