What can be done about Pelvic Floor problems? GMTV's Dr Chris Steele explains:
Regain your pelvic floor strength! Pelvic floor exercises is one option (kegel exercises) - recommended in 400 per day for at least 90 days for results. However, studies show that more than 43% do not finish training. It is also notoriously difficult to know if one is doing them correctly - and doing them incorrectly can make the problem worse. However there are new products coming on the market that can help with Pelvic Floor Problems. One such is the Athena, invented by a US doctor to manage pain - but his wife suggested it might help with Pelvic Floor Problems.

About the Athena Pelvic Muscle Trainer
The Athena Pelvic Muscle Trainer was developed in the USA where it has FDA approval and is Medicare reimbursable. Clinical trials were conducted by Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Medical School at the Texas Medical Center in Houston Texas.
Who can use Pelvic Muscle Trainer
The Athena Pelvic Muscle Trainer™is best suited for women who suffer from one of the following types of incontinence:
• Stress incontinence
• Urge incontinence
• Mixed incontinence
Women who use the Pelvic Muscle Trainer should not be pregnant or attempting to get pregnant. They should be free of vaginal infection, and not have a cardiac pacemaker.
How does the Athena Pelvic Muscle Trainer work?
The Athena Pelvic Muscle Trainer applies a mild electrical impulse to the pelvic muscles inducing them to contract and relax in a similar manner to pelvic floor exercises and so tone up the lax muscles. This is known as Myostimulation. It also stimulates nerve fibres that can facilitate or inhibit a sensory-motor response and so countermand the effect of hyperactive bladder.
Research has shown that myostimulation can be effective in reducing or eliminating urinary incontinence in up to 90% of sufferers.

What the Athena users say:
"Well as you can see by the attached photo I made it! I took a huge supply of pads and brought them all back, even though we walked about 6 or 7 miles a day. I am now looking forward to buying smaller handbags that don't have to carry "necessary supplies". I still have a problem just before my period and about 14 days after, and I am convinced that these are linked to hormonal changes and a "relaxation" of muscles. So I am going to continue to use the exerciser and see if this improves. "
"My message to other women trying the Athena exerciser would be to not give up, even if there is no great improvement after 12 weeks, because another 3 or 4 weeks could suddenly make all the difference. "Regards
Comments from participants in the Athena Field Study
"Since the beginning of my participation in the study, I have seen amazing results from the Pelvic Muscle Trainer device. It is so easy to use and works as it was designed to do in creating a pelvic muscle contraction. When used as directed on a continued basis, I have seen the device greatly improve my muscle strength and relieve my pelvic floor disorder, in return. Now that I have experienced such remarkable results with using the Pelvic Muscle Trainer device, I cannot and will not give it up."
"I am immensely grateful for the progress I have made. After years of suffering I have finally begun to feel like a normal woman again. I definitely want to continue using the Pelvic Muscle Trainer, even when the study is over. I would very much like to see women everywhere given access to such a valuable piece of equipment."
"The muscle trainer itself has many advantages over classical exercises. It is simple to use and it works to contract pelvic muscles as designed so that I always receive a consistent workout regardless of when I use it or how I am feeling. Its adjustable voltage allows me to increase the intensity of contractions so that as my muscle strength improves I receive a greater benefit with each use. I am positive that other women will benefit from the use of this device. I know that my muscle trainer is safe and effective. I would not be willing to part with it because I have had such a positive experience with it."
