Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the Kegel8?
Kegel8 is a range of pelvic floor exercise machines; we have the Tight and Tone with 9 pre-set programmes, and the Ultra with 14 programmes. These machines are widely used in physiotherapy departments within the NHS to help strengthen weak pelvic floor, or kegel muscles.
Q. How does the Kegel8 work?
The machine directs an electronic pulse to the pelvic muscle via the probe (vaginal or anal). This pulse helps the muscle to contract, when the pulse finishes, the muscle relaxes. The pulse works for several seconds at a time, and relaxes for several seconds - depending on the programme you have selected. This is a pre-programmed complete work-out for your pelvic floor.
Q. What does the Kegel8 do?
It automatically exercises dormant muscles. Working deep within the muscle structure either vaginally and/or anally the electronic nerve pulse contracts the muscle. This stimulates blood to flow into the muscle. The blood brings oxygen which feeds and makes the muscle stronger. The nerve pulse on some programmes also helps to promote "sprouting" that is the regrowth of nerves that may have been damaged during childbirth, surgery etc. By stimulating new nerves means you'll regain sensation that may have been lost.
Q. I can't do the "squeeze and release" exercise, will this help?
Absolutely! That's what makes the Kegel8 Tight & Tone and Kegel8 Ultra so good, they exercise your muscles even though they are weak. So often women tell us that they can't feel their muscles to exercise them, this means they are very weak and they need a helping hand. The Kegel8 automatically stimulates them back into action and gets them working properly again.
Q. What does it feel like?
When the Kegel8 electronic pulse contracts your muscles you will feel them move, you will feel it gently tingling when it stimulates your muscles back to life.
Q. Is it a sex toy?
No it's not designed for that, it is designed as a physiotherapy machine to rehabilitate your weak pelvic floor. What you will find though is that you will awaken deeper sensations as the muscles and nerves get stronger.
Q. Can I use the Kegel8 if I have an IUD or Mirena coil fitted?
Yes. The Mirena is plastic so not problems there. An IUD contains copper which is unaffected by the Kegel8 and STIM so no problems there either.
Q. Can I use my Kegel8 when I have a period?
There are no problems with this, however if you are at the peak of your period and flow is heavy you may prefer not to. Many users have reported it helps with menstrual cramps too. Here in the office we use tend to use it on lighter flow days. Rinse the probe in warm water and towel dry, the probe can be sterilized using a mild sterilizing solution if necessary, do not immerse the connectors at the ends of the leads in water, do not boil (it will cause the plastic to crack).
Q. Can I use the Kegel8 whilst pregnant?
Clinical guidelines advise against using any STIM machines vaginally during pregnancy. But as soon as you have had the "all-clear" from your health advisor then get back into your kegel8 exercise routine to regain your pre-baby muscle tone!
Q. How soon after giving birth can I start with my Kegel8?
Consult with your Midwife or Doctor. Generally women feel happy to start after a successful six week check-up.
Q. I have just had pelvic surgery, how soon can I start to use the Kegel8?
Consult with your Doctor or Consultant, every case is different, but the Kegel8 could help to speed your recovery. Stress Incontinence, and prolapse is usually a sign of a weak pelvic floor, so if you have had an operation to help with either of these conditions you will still need to strengthen it. The Kegel8 is ideal, but check with your Doctor or physiotherapist.
Q I can't find an answer to my question?
Give us a call, we have personal experience of the Kegel8 and if we can't answer it, the medical manufactures will.
